Chapter Sixteen

Hutch

After Nat left for her spa day, I stayed in the bathroom for a while and stared vacantly into the mirror. I wasn’t sure what I saw there anymore. The tattoos that curled around my body told the story of my life. The ups and downs, the triumphs and defeats. But I didn’t feel the connection to them I once did.

I’d been thinking about family a lot. It seems strange that I’d met both of Natalie’s parents now and she’d never meet mine. Now that I’d left the pack I didn’t really have a family at all, except Nat.

And if we settled here? Maybe one day we’d have a family of our own.

I didn’t know if I wanted the responsibility of being a father. What kind of legacy would I pass on to a child? I was only good at two things. Fighting and… well, the other one. What did I have to offer a kid?

I wandered aimlessly through the massive hotel room for a while and then located the remote. The TV rose from the ground and I tried to get comfortable on the couch as I flicked through the endless sports channels.

I was surprised to find myself missing Pops. Nat had no interest in sports, and it just wasn’t the same watching by myself. Pops and I could watch anything. Any sport, from any country in the world, and we’d instantly feel like experts. We’d argue about which team was best and cuss out the referee when decisions didn’t go our way.

I ended up turning the television off and just staring out at the view until it was time to head downstairs and meet Jackson and Mike.

The entertainment complex was housed in a building next door to the hotel. Two auditoriums and a maze of tunnels led to an array of changing rooms and offices backstage. There was also an impressive gym and medical center. It all looked brand new and state of the art. No expense spared.

“We’ve been up and running for a few weeks. A couple of shows a night, but it’s the fights everyone turns up for. That’s what we want to bring you in to run.”

We were sitting in the main auditorium, looking down the empty ring.

“I gotta admit, I don’t know why. Why you want me that is. I’m not exactly management material.”

Jackson nodded at Mike, letting him take over the pitch.

“I came to see you fight, and you put on a good show. Not just your bout, but the whole ticket. The crowd was into it. Everyone in that place was into it. That’s what we want here. The sort of show people will come back to every night.”

“Why did you come to see me fight in the first place?”

My question caught Mike off guard and he fumbled for an answer, “I’d heard… I was… I guess I was in the area and just looking for something to do.”

What he came up with didn’t really make sense, but I let it slide.
